As part of our prep for this weekend’s 50th Anniversary celebration, Rene Meyer DeLucia shared with me her collection of Leo Derlak images from back in the day. I’d seen some of the images before, and nearly all brought a smile to my face.
Some pictures of us donning the white sneakers and stockings had been posted to Facebook over the past several years, invariably with comments asking the same question: What would ever possess us to wear them???
Giving up our floorwax-polished black boots was not something we did voluntarily. Could be worse – we could have chosen to wear the sneakers with knee socks like some of our competitors did. Not as obvious and not to be outdone, the Ensemble also had to ditch their bucks – but chose to don black socks instead since they only had to stay in place marking time.
